Doogh is a cold, savoury yogurt drink from Iran made by whisking yogurt with water, salt and dried mint, often topped up with sparkling water for a light fizz. It is tangy, salty and refreshing, thinner than ayran when diluted well. It is traditionally served alongside grilled kebabs and rice, especially in hot weather.

History

Yogurt drinks like doogh have been made for centuries across Persia and the neighbouring regions; the name comes from a Persian word related to milking. Today doogh is drunk all over Iran and also in Afghanistan, Azerbaijan and Kurdish areas, both homemade and bottled.
