A grilled cheese sandwich is two slices of bread filled with cheese, buttered on the outside and cooked in a pan until the bread is crisp and golden and the cheese inside has melted. Cheddar or American cheese are the classic choices. It is a quick lunch or snack, often eaten with tomato soup.

How to make it lighter

History

Cheese melted on bread is an old idea in many cuisines, but the American grilled cheese took shape in the early 20th century, when sliced bread and processed cheese became cheap and widely available. It became a fixture of diners and home kitchens across the United States.
