🥤 Vanilla milkshake
A vanilla milkshake is the simplest and most classic shake: cold milk blended with vanilla ice cream and a little sugar until thick and smooth. It tastes sweet, creamy and gently perfumed with vanilla. It is served in a tall glass with a straw at diners and fast-food counters, and is often the base for other flavours.

Recipe
Ingredients
- 400 ml cold milk
- 4 scoops vanilla ice cream (about 250 g)
- 1 tbsp sugar (optional)
- 1/2 tsp vanilla extract (optional)
Method
- Put the milk, vanilla ice cream, and sugar and vanilla extract if using, into a blender.
- Blend for 30–60 seconds until thick and smooth.
- Pour into tall glasses and serve straight away.
How to make it lighter
- Choose the small size; a standard 350 ml shake is already a dessert.
- Leave out the added sugar — the ice cream is sweet enough.
- Use low-fat milk and two scoops of ice cream instead of four for a lighter shake.
History
The milkshake became a fixture of American soda fountains in the early 20th century, once electric mixers made it easy to blend ice cream with milk. Vanilla, the default ice-cream flavour, has always been the standard order. Today the vanilla shake is on menus around the world.
