☕ Mocha
A mocha, or caffè mocha, is a coffee-house drink of espresso mixed with chocolate syrup and topped up with steamed milk. It tastes like a cross between a latte and a hot chocolate: bittersweet, creamy and rich. It is served hot in a large cup or glass, sometimes dusted with cocoa.

What it is made of
Recipe
Ingredients
- 1 shot espresso (30 ml)
- 20 ml chocolate syrup
- 200 ml milk
Method
- Pour the chocolate syrup into a cup.
- Brew the espresso over it and stir to combine.
- Steam or heat and froth the milk and pour it into the cup.
How to make it lighter
- Ask for half the chocolate syrup; most of the sugar comes from it.
- Use skimmed milk to cut fat while keeping the creamy texture.
- Choose a small cup instead of a large one.
History
The name comes from Mocha, the Yemeni port on the Red Sea that was a major centre of the coffee trade for centuries. The espresso-and-chocolate drink is a later invention that became a standard item on coffee-shop menus worldwide.
