🧇 Waffle
A waffle is a batter of flour, eggs, milk, sugar and melted butter baked between two hot patterned plates. The grid pattern gives it a crisp golden shell and a soft, airy inside. It is eaten warm for breakfast or dessert, often dusted with sugar or topped with fresh fruit.

Recipe
Ingredients
- 250 g wheat flour
- 2 eggs
- 400 ml milk
- 30 g sugar
- 80 g butter, melted
- 2 tsp baking powder
- 1 pinch salt
Method
- Whisk the flour, sugar, baking powder and salt in a bowl.
- Beat the eggs with the milk, then stir in the melted butter.
- Pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients and mix until just smooth; rest for 10 minutes.
- Preheat and lightly grease the waffle iron.
- Ladle in the batter and bake for 4–5 minutes until golden and crisp. Serve warm.
How to make it lighter
- Top with fresh berries instead of syrup or whipped toppings.
- Make thinner waffles or share one large waffle to keep the portion smaller.
- 1 tbsp maple-style syrup adds about 50 kcal — measure it instead of pouring.
History
Wafer-like cakes baked between iron plates were made in medieval Europe, and the deep-grid waffle became strongly associated with Belgium and the Netherlands. Belgian-style waffles gained wide international fame in the twentieth century and are now a café and street-food staple worldwide.
