🫐 Açaí bowl
An açaí bowl is frozen açaí berry pulp blended with banana into a thick, sorbet-like base, then topped with crunchy granola, fresh berries, sliced banana and a drizzle of honey. It is eaten with a spoon, cold and slightly tart, with the toppings adding crunch and sweetness. It is a popular breakfast or post-beach snack.

Recipe
Ingredients
- 200 g frozen unsweetened açaí pulp
- 1 large banana, frozen in slices, plus half a banana to top
- 100 g mixed berries
- 4 tbsp granola
- 2 tsp honey
- Splash of water to blend
Method
- Break the frozen açaí into pieces and put it in a blender with the frozen banana and a splash of water.
- Blend in short pulses until thick and smooth, scraping down the sides — keep it as thick as soft-serve.
- Spoon into two chilled bowls.
- Top with berries, sliced banana and granola, drizzle with honey and serve at once.
How to make it lighter
- Granola and honey add the most calories: 2 tbsp of granola instead of 4 and no honey keep the bowl much lighter.
- Use unsweetened açaí pulp — sweetened packs carry a lot of added sugar.
- Pile on extra berries for volume instead of more banana or granola.
History
Açaí palms grow in the Amazon, where the berries have long been a staple food in the state of Pará. The sweet frozen “açaí na tigela” with granola and banana became popular in Rio de Janeiro and other Brazilian cities in the late 20th century, and from there spread to cafés around the world.
