🍞 Brown toast
Brown toast is sliced whole-wheat bread toasted until the surface is golden and crisp while the inside stays slightly soft. It has a fuller, slightly nutty flavour than white toast. It is a breakfast basic, eaten plain with tea or coffee or as the base for toppings such as tomato, avocado, cucumber or spreads.

Recipe
Ingredients
- 2 slices whole-wheat bread (about 60 g)
- Toppings of choice: sliced tomato, cucumber, avocado or fresh herbs
- Pinch of salt and black pepper
Method
- Toast the slices in a toaster or under a hot grill for 2–3 minutes until golden on both sides.
- Add the toppings straight away and season with salt and pepper.
How to make it lighter
- Two slices are about 160 kcal before anything goes on top — the spread decides the rest.
- Top with tomato, cucumber or herbs instead of sweet spreads.
- Add protein on the side to make one slice more filling than two plain ones.
History
Toasted whole-wheat bread is eaten at breakfast tables around the world, from British cafés to hotel buffets in the Gulf.
