Recipe
Ingredients
- 4 sausages (frankfurter style)
- 4 long soft hot dog buns
- 2 ripe avocados
- 3 tomatoes, finely chopped
- 4 tbsp mayonnaise
- Salt
- Optional: sauerkraut or a little chili sauce
Method
- Heat the sausages in simmering water for 5–6 minutes.
- Mash the avocado with a pinch of salt.
- Chop the tomatoes finely and drain off excess juice.
- Warm the buns and place a sausage in each.
- Top with plenty of avocado, chopped tomato and mayonnaise and serve at once.
How to make it lighter
- Choose leaner sausages, such as chicken or turkey, to cut fat and keep protein.
- Use more avocado and tomato and less mayonnaise: the toppings stay creamy but the calories fall.
- Pick a smaller or wholegrain bun, and eat it with a side salad instead of fries.
History
The completo is a classic of Chilean street food and casual eating. Its trademark toppings of avocado, tomato and mayonnaise set it apart from the hot dog of other countries. The name means “complete”, referring to the full set of toppings. It is a regular choice at sports events, markets and street stalls.
