🍰 Gâteau au yaourt (yogurt cake)
Gâteau au yaourt is the simple French yogurt cake that many children learn to bake first. The yogurt pot itself is used as the measuring cup for flour, sugar and oil, with eggs and lemon zest added to the batter. The result is a moist, light, lemony loaf cake, served plain in slices for breakfast or an afternoon snack.

Recipe
Ingredients
- 1 pot plain yogurt (125 g)
- 3 pots flour (about 210 g)
- 2 pots sugar (about 200 g)
- 3 eggs
- ½ pot oil (about 60 ml)
- 1 lemon, zest and juice
- 2 tsp baking powder
Method
- Heat the oven to 180 °C and grease a loaf tin.
- Mix the yogurt, eggs and sugar, then add the oil and lemon zest and juice.
- Fold in the flour and baking powder until smooth.
- Pour into the tin and bake for 35–40 minutes until a skewer comes out clean.
How to make it lighter
- Cut the cake into 10 slices instead of 8.
- Use 1½ pots of sugar; the lemon keeps it fragrant.
- Serve a slice with fresh fruit rather than jam.
History
The cake is a staple of French home baking, valued because the yogurt pot does the measuring and no scales are needed. It is usually described as a family and school recipe rather than one with a known inventor, and it is still baked in French homes every day.
