☕ Hot Chocolate
Hot chocolate is hot milk whisked with cocoa powder and sugar until smooth and frothy. It is rich, sweet and comforting, with a deep chocolate flavour and a velvety texture. It is served in a mug on cold days, often as an afternoon drink or a sweet treat after a walk outdoors.

What it is made of
Recipe
Ingredients
- 400 ml milk
- 2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 tbsp sugar
- Pinch of salt
- Pinch of cinnamon (optional)
Method
- Mix the cocoa, sugar and salt with 3 tbsp of the milk to a smooth paste in a small pan.
- Add the rest of the milk and heat gently, whisking, until steaming but not boiling.
- Whisk briskly to froth, add cinnamon if using, and pour into mugs.
How to make it lighter
- Use skimmed or semi-skimmed milk for a lighter mug.
- Halve the sugar; unsweetened cocoa keeps the chocolate taste strong; 1 tbsp sugar ≈ 48 kcal.
- Choose a 150 ml cup instead of a large mug.
History
Cocoa drinks originated in Mesoamerica and reached Europe after the Spanish conquest, where they were sweetened and later made with milk. Cocoa powder, developed in the 19th century, made the milky hot chocolate known today easy to prepare at home.
