🥪 Sandwich
A basic sandwich is two slices of bread around a filling — sliced chicken or turkey is a typical choice — with crisp lettuce and fresh tomato. It is quick, portable and endlessly adaptable, from a lunchbox staple to a café counter classic. The calories depend mostly on the bread and on how generous the filling and spreads are.

Recipe
Ingredients
- 2 slices of bread
- 60 g sliced cooked chicken or turkey
- 2 lettuce leaves
- 3 slices of tomato
- Salt and black pepper
- 1 tsp mustard (optional)
Method
- Lightly toast the bread if you like.
- Layer the lettuce, chicken and tomato on one slice and season with salt and pepper.
- Top with the second slice, press gently and cut in half.
How to make it lighter
- Choose whole-grain bread and skip rich spreads — mustard adds flavour for very few calories.
- Pick a lean filling such as chicken or turkey breast.
- Add extra vegetables like cucumber or peppers for volume.
History
The sandwich is popularly named after John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich, in 18th-century England, although people had eaten food between bread long before. Today it is one of the most common lunches around the world.
