☕ Chai latte
A chai latte is black tea brewed with warming spices — cardamom, cinnamon and ginger — then sweetened and topped up with steamed, frothy milk. It is creamier and milder than traditional Indian masala chai and is served hot in a large cup, usually as a café drink in the afternoon.

Recipe
Ingredients
- 250 ml water
- 2 tsp loose black tea
- 4 cardamom pods, lightly crushed
- 1 cinnamon stick
- 3 thin slices fresh ginger
- 2 tsp sugar
- 300 ml milk
Method
- Simmer the water with the cardamom, cinnamon and ginger for 5 minutes.
- Add the tea and sugar, simmer 2 minutes, then strain.
- Heat and froth the milk.
- Pour the spiced tea into cups and top with the steamed milk.
How to make it lighter
- Sugar adds up quickly — 1 tsp is about 16 kcal, so halve it or skip it and lean on the spices.
- Use skimmed or semi-skimmed milk to cut fat without losing the foam.
- Order a small size: a 300 ml cup and a 450 ml cup differ by roughly half again in calories.
History
The chai latte is a café adaptation of Indian masala chai, which is boiled with milk and spices; the latte version with steamed milk became popular in Western coffee shops from the 1990s.
