🌴 Dates (5 pieces)
Five dried dates are the everyday Gulf snack: soft, chewy fruits with a deep caramel and honey sweetness. Varieties such as Khalas, Sukkari and Medjool differ in size, texture and sweetness, so the weight of five pieces can vary a lot. They are eaten on their own or with a small cup of Arabic coffee.

What it is made of
Recipe
Ingredients
- 5 dates (about 40 g, depending on variety)
- Cold water for rinsing
- A glass of water to serve
Method
- Rinse the dates if needed.
- Serve them on a small plate, with or without the pits.
- Pair them with Arabic coffee or water.
How to make it lighter
- Large Medjool dates can weigh two or three times as much as small varieties, so count by weight, not just pieces.
- Three dates with coffee is a classic, modest portion.
- Eat them slowly with water or unsweetened coffee rather than with sweet drinks.
History
The date palm has been cultivated in the Arabian Peninsula and Mesopotamia for thousands of years, and dates remain a symbol of hospitality and the traditional food for breaking the fast in Ramadan.
