🌴 Dates with Tahini
Tamr with tahini is a simple sweet of soft dates dipped in or drizzled with smooth sesame tahini. The dates bring sticky caramel sweetness and the tahini a rich, nutty, slightly bitter edge, so the pairing tastes almost like a confection. It is served with Arabic coffee, as a quick snack or as an energy-dense bite at suhoor.

Recipe
Ingredients
- 10 soft dates (about 100 g)
- 2 tbsp tahini
- A pinch of ground cardamom (optional)
Method
- Slit the dates and remove the pits.
- Stir the tahini well and loosen it with a few drops of water if very thick.
- Arrange the dates on a plate, drizzle with tahini and dust with cardamom, or serve the tahini as a dip.
How to make it lighter
- Tahini is calorie-dense: 1 tbsp tahini ≈ 90 kcal, so measure it instead of dipping freely.
- Limit the portion to 3–4 dates with coffee rather than a full plate.
- Thin the tahini with water and a squeeze of lemon so a smaller amount coats more dates.
History
Dates and sesame have both been eaten across the Arabian Peninsula and the Levant for centuries. Pairing them is a familiar home habit in the Gulf and the wider Middle East, rather than a dish with a recorded origin.
