🍰 Vasina Torta
Vasina torta is a classic Serbian layered cake built on a biscuit base, with a thick walnut and chocolate filling and a smooth buttercream layer on top. It is rich, nutty and dense rather than airy, and is cut into small slices. It is a traditional cake for slavas (family saint-day celebrations) and holidays.

Recipe
Ingredients
- 200 g plain biscuits
- 200 g walnuts, ground
- 150 g dark chocolate, melted
- 150 g soft butter
- 150 g powdered sugar
- 100 ml hot water
Method
- Line a 20 cm tin with the biscuits.
- Mix the ground walnuts with the melted chocolate, 75 g sugar and the hot water; spread over the biscuits.
- Beat the butter with the remaining sugar until fluffy to make the buttercream.
- Spread the buttercream over the walnut layer and smooth the top.
- Chill for at least 4 hours before slicing.
How to make it lighter
- Cut thin slices — a small square goes a long way with a cake this rich.
- Use less buttercream on top and finish with grated chocolate instead.
- Serve with unsweetened coffee or tea rather than a sweet drink.
History
The cake's name means 'Vasa's cake', and it is usually linked to a Belgrade family of the late 19th or early 20th century, though accounts of who Vasa was differ.
