How it is calculated
BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)². For adults the WHO uses these ranges: below 18.5 underweight, 18.5–24.9 healthy weight, 25–29.9 overweight, 30 and above obesity.
BMI is a quick screening tool, not a diagnosis. It does not measure body fat directly: muscular people can have a high BMI, and older people can have a normal BMI with little muscle.
Some health services use lower thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, other Asian, Middle Eastern, Black African or African-Caribbean background. BMI for children and teenagers is calculated differently, and it does not apply during pregnancy.
Questions
What is a healthy BMI?
For most adults, a BMI from 18.5 to 24.9 is considered a healthy weight.
Is BMI accurate?
It is a useful first check for most adults, but it doesn't tell muscle from fat. Waist size is another simple measure: a large waist is linked to higher health risks even at a normal BMI.
Can I use it for children?
No. Children's BMI is compared against growth charts for their age and sex — ask your doctor or use a child-specific tool.
My BMI is high — what should I do?
A good first step is to talk to your doctor. A small, steady calorie deficit, more movement and tracking what you eat help most people lose weight safely.
